Topic: PFAS & PFOS Emerging Contaminants: What You Need To Know!

EPA says it's developing plan to manage chemical contaminants in water

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of emerging contaminants which have properties that resist heat, water, and grease and reduce friction.  Because of their unique chemistry, PFAS have been widely used in industrial and consumer products for the past 50 years, making them ubiquitous in the environment.  The complexity of the mixtures, stability of the molecules and lack of retardation in groundwater make PFAS challenging to characterize and remediate.  With the current Federal inaction, States are taking the lead on PFAS regulation, creating a patchwork of regulations and significant challenges for managing PFAS liabilities.  At the same time, as sampling and analysis for PFAS has increased, so has the detection of these compounds -  the more places that we look for PFAS in the environment, the more that we find them.  Increasing detections of PFAS in water supplies and the environment have led to increased public concern and significant risks and liabilities for both the public and private sectors, including product liability, insurance coverage challenges, permitting requirements, and environmental remediation.  This seminar will present a technical overview of PFAS challenges, including environmental occurrence, the unsettled regulatory landscape, characterization challenges, potential impacts to operations and remedial options.

Speaker: Seth Kellogg, PG

Ms. Kellogg has over 25 years of experience in the areas of project management, project planning, remedial investigation, feasibility study, remedial design, data evaluation, and report preparation for NYSDEC and USEPA. For the past 12 years, she has lead multi-disciplinary teams to create innovative and cost-effective solutions to complex environmental challenges while managing projects to scope, schedule and budget. Ms. Kellogg has become a leader in evaluating and managing PFAS including co-authoring the first PFAS best practices guidance (NGWA 2018), educating industry professionals on the unique challenges of characterizing and remediating PFAS and providing technical advice to congressional and state staff on PFAS policy.  Additional areas of technical expertise include chlorinated solvents and DNAPL in groundwater, aqueous geochemistry (wet chemistry and stable isotopes), contaminated sediments (characterization, management and natural attenuation) and mercury.
